#EasterSportsFest: Steyn City and CBC Zimbabwe start festival with big victories

The festival started with hockey matches held at the St Dunstan's College and Benoni High School astros.

Although intermittent drizzle threatened to delay the start of the St Dunstan’s College Easter Sports Festival, with a lighting warning halting the start of the third hockey match by 30 minutes, the event got off to a flyer with matches held on the school’s astro and at Benoni High School (BHS).

Steyn City dominated the girls’ pool with an incredible one-sided victory over Zimbabwe’s The Heritage School while St Dominic’s Catholic School for girls also claimed a big win in their fixture.

CBC Zimbabwe got the ball rolling with a statement of their own in the boys’ category, with the hosts, St Dunstan’s winning the Benoni derby against BHS.

Girls

At the start of the programme, the St Dunstan’s girls’ first team and Hoerskool Goudveld put on a show on the immaculate St Dunstan’s astro, with a new scoreboard on the far side of the field.

With local support behind them and home-ground advantage, St Dunstan’s had all the reasons to start positively but it wasn’t the start the girls were expecting.

Goudveld pummeled them 6-0 in a dominant display that saw the Welkom school race to a 3-0 lead before the break and added another three in the second half to start their tournament on a good note.

At BHS, St Dominic’s started their title defence with an 8-0 win over the Benoni High girls while St Peter’s College claimed a narrow 1-0 victory over Lomagundi College from Zimbabwe.

Jeppe College for Girls and Curro Salt Rock played to 0-0 draw while Hillcrest dominated Wise Owl College 3-0.

In the late fixtures, Hillcrest made it two from two with a 4-0 win over Jeppe while Steyn City destroyed The Heritage School 11-0. Hellenic won 3-0 against Wise Owl and Goudveld beat St Peter’s in the last match of the day.

Boys

In the second match of the day, Hoerskool Dr EG Jansen tried their mighty best against Lomagundi but in the end fell short, losing the contest 1-0. St Peter’s also claimed a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Goudveld in a tight match that looked like it would end in draw.

The boys from St Dunstan’s continued their dominance of neighbours, BHS, with a clean 3-0 victory while Reddam House dominated Springs Boys with a 3-1 victory.

CBC Boksburg won 2-1 against Hellenic Academy from Zimbabwe, while CBC Zimbabwe thrashed Curro Salt Rock 7-0.

Beaulieu College beat Thomas More 2-0 and St George’s College defeated Hillcrest 4-2.

Goudveld beat Curro Salt Rock 4-0.

The action continues tomorrow from 07:00.
