Reiger Park filmmaker tackles hurdles to uplift his community

Based in Reiger Park, his production specialises in short films that explore meaningful narratives and reflect the realities of the community.

Local filmmaker George Booysen is on a mission to inspire change in his community through the power of storytelling.

Based in Reiger Park, his production company specialises in short films that explore meaningful narratives and reflect the realities of the community.

Booysen’s journey into filmmaking is driven by a desire to leave a lasting legacy, not just for himself but for future generations.

“I came up with the name GB Legacy for my business because I want to leave something behind.

“The film industry is not easy, but I believe through hard work, others can see that the impossible is achievable.”

Booysen said his love for filmmaking began while watching YouTube videos, which inspired him to make his first film and combine it with his background in photography.

“Although I felt uncertain as I started, my desire to tell stories that could help change my community pushed me forward.

“I see the challenges we face in Reiger Park – drug use, violence, gangsterism and abuse – and I want to tell those stories from a different perspective, with a message of hope.

“I hope people who watch my short films feel inspired and can relate to the portrayed experiences,” he explained.

Despite receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback, Booysen acknowledges there are challenges, particularly around resources.

“People often ask what happens to the characters in my films and want to see longer versions.

“I would love to create full-length films, but it is tough when you are funding everything yourself.”

Booysen explained equipment, actors and locations remain significant hurdles. However, he remains hopeful.
“I pray for the support and resources to take my productions to the next level.”

Booysen said his films are deeply personal and develop the characters and stories based on things he experienced or what he has seen happening around him.

“Reiger Park itself plays a major role in my films; it’s almost like a character in its own right. But I don’t want to limit myself. For now, though, Reiger Park is where I draw most of my inspiration.”

Citing American filmmaker Quentin Tarantino as one of his influences, Booysen said he dreams of creating a series that showcases local life and how people in his community overcome challenges.

“My goal for GB Legacy Pictures is to become a professional production house that opens doors for aspiring actors, sound technicians, directors and producers.

“A year ago, I never thought I would have a YouTube channel, but now I have over 200 000 views.

This keeps pushing me, and I want to give people the same sense of hope and possibility that I found through filmmaking,” he said.
