Athletes take lead at league meeting

This was the second last league meeting before the provincial championships on November 9.

The Boksburg Athletic Club (BAC) and Jansen Athletics Club (JAC) sprinters and throwers delivered an incredible athletics exhibition at the second CGA sub-youth track and field league meeting at Germiston Stadium on October 5.

The athletes asserted themselves looking to impress the provincial selectors as they continued their build-up to the CGA championships next month and the nationals in December in Bloemfontein.

Charne Erasmus and Ewald Taijaard led the way with sublime performances in their categories while Lanelda Herbst continued impressing in the discus and shot put.

Sprinters take charge

Erasmus was in superb form in the hurdles and the sprints. After winning the U13 girls’ 200m in 31.13, she clocked 12.31 to win her heat in 75m hurdles but finished third overall. Her teammate Lara Steyn was third in the category in 12.92.

Lian du Plessis was second in the U7 boys’ 80m, finishing behind Aaron Ani of Benoni Northerns Athletics Club (BNAC) in 09.68 and Mikayla Booysens finished tied fourth overall, despite winning her heat in 09.43.

Marcu du Plessis won his U11 boys’ 80m sprint in 11.31 but finished seventh overall, Anshin Lubbe was ninth in the U13 girls’ 100m while Leanli Botha clocked 13.56 to round up the podium in the U11 girls’ 70m hurdles.

On the field, Herbst threw 10.67m in the U13 girls’ shot put for third place and later in the day sent the discus sailing out to 30.29m to complete the top three in her category.

Alexis Nel came second in the U13 girls’ high jump after clearing 1.45m.

Field dominance

The Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen-based athletes controlled their events, especially in the discus and shot put, where the Taljaard and co displayed their power.

Taljaard was dominant in the U13 boys’ discus and shot put. He threw 39.16 in the shot put, beating second-place Iwan Labuschagne of Irun by 07.09m.

He then took a first position in the discus, throwing 16.07m, clear of second-placed Ethan Roberts 11.47m.

Lilly Craukamp finished second in the U13 girls’ discus after sending her discus flying out to 31.19m and Sjanri Botha cleared 4.48m for second place in the U11 girls’ long jump.

Rhugo Jacobs finished seventh in the U9 boys’ 80m sprint after clocking 11.98.
