Parkrand Tennis Complex expands to offer padel, with plans for pickleball

The complex, known for its rich tennis history, is under the leadership of Andries Fourie, chairperson for the past three years.

In a move to modernise and diversify its offerings, the Parkrand Tennis Complex, a staple of the local community for nearly five decades, is expanding its facilities to include padel courts and plans to offer pickleball soon.

With its expansion into new sports and a continued commitment to its tennis roots, the Parkrand Tennis Complex is positioning itself as a hub for traditional and emerging racket sports in the region.

The complex, known for its rich tennis history, is under the leadership of Andries Fourie, who has been chairperson for the past three years.

Fourie, who has a long-standing connection with the club, began his journey as a player and later became an active committee member.

“I started playing tennis when I was 19, usually considered a bit late to start the sport. But my dad encouraged me and this is how it began,” he said.

Under Fourie’s leadership, the club has thrived, boasting a growing membership base and dedicated coaching staff.

“While we have a strong membership, we always welcome more members. We have three tennis coaches, one of whom is a full-time coach,” Fourie explained.

The complex’s expansion into padel, a fast-growing racket sport that combines elements of tennis and squash, is part of an effort to stay relevant and attract a broader audience.

“We aim to provide our members with modern, versatile sports options. Padel is something fresh and exciting, and we are also hoping to bring in pickleball,” he added.

Pickleball is a simple paddle game played with a baseball-sized wiffle ball over a tennis-type net on a badminton-sized court.

The tennis club’s facilities, which Fourie described as welcoming and well taken care of, stand out in an era when many tennis clubs struggle with upkeep.

“Many clubs are not as well-maintained as they used to be, but we take pride in ensuring ours is in great condition.

It is important for our members to feel comfortable and proud of where they play,” Fourie noted.
