VIDEO: Men assault Gauteng Traffic Wardens in Reiger Park

The incident, which was captured in a video circulating on social media, occurred over the weekend while the wardens were conducting routine patrols.

A video circulating on social media captures Gauteng Traffic Wardens being attacked by members of the public in Reiger Park, apparently during the past weekend.
The footage shows chaotic moments as community members confront the wardens, leading to a physical altercation.

According to Sello Maremane Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson, who could not confirm the exact date and time of the incident, the wardens intervened when they observed two rival gang members fighting.

“However, both individuals turned on the wardens and assaulted them. Law enforcement swiftly responded, leading to the arrest of the two suspects involved in the altercation.

“The department has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of all Gauteng residents and urged the public to cooperate with Gauteng Traffic Wardens and other law enforcement officers in rooting out criminal elements within their communities.”

The Gauteng provincial legislature’s portfolio committee on community safety called on premier Panyaza Lesufi and provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni to act swiftly against those involved in the assault on the wardens.

Bandile Masuku, chairperson of the portfolio committee, said the unjustifiable attack on law enforcement officials who serve to protect communities is not only a crime against individuals involved but also a direct assault on the rule of law and undermines the safety and security of all citizens.

“The committee firmly supports Gauteng Crime Prevention Wardens who risk their lives daily to maintain peace and order in the province and believes any form of violence against them must be met with the full might of the law,” said Masuku.

“The committee further calls on the public to assist the investigation by providing information that could help ensure those responsible are swiftly brought to justice.”
