Dawn Park SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Nkemeleng Mabula has issued important guidelines for the community on how to report a missing person effectively.

Mabula emphasised that there is no waiting period to report a missing person.

“It is crucial that families and friends act immediately when someone goes missing.

“Every moment counts, and prompt reporting can significantly enhance the chances of a safe return.”

Key steps for reporting a missing person

When reporting a missing person, the police request that individuals provide as much detailed information as possible. This includes:

• Full name and age: The complete identity of the missing person.

• Physical description: Details such as height, weight, hair color, and any distinguishing features.

• Clothing description: Information about what the person was wearing at the time of their disappearance.

• Last known whereabouts: Any details regarding the individual’s last activities or locations can be invaluable.

In addition to this information, Mabula highlighted the importance of providing a recent photograph of the missing person.

“A clear, up-to-date image can greatly assist both law enforcement and the public in identifying the individual,” she noted.

Once a report has been filed, families are encouraged to maintain open lines of communication with the investigating officer.

Mabula said it is important to obtain the contact details of the investigating officer and maintain regular communication with them.

“Any new information that arises should be communicated to them promptly, as it may be crucial to the investigation.”

Sthembile Mkithi (36) of Somalia Park was last seen in the area wearing a pink jacket, black leggings and black boots. Contact her brother-in-law on 060 397 0342.

She pointed out that members of the community can assist by sharing information on social media and informing relevant NGOs, such as Missing Children South Africa or Pink Ladies, to broaden the search efforts.

“Posters and flyers with the missing person’s information can also be distributed in the local area.”

In addition, Mabula said as the investigation progresses, the reporting person should be prepared to provide any additional information that may be requested by the investigating officer.

“This includes dental records, DNA samples, or information about the missing person’s online activities and social media accounts.”

If the missing person is found

“If the missing person is located or returns voluntarily, the investigating officer must be informed immediately.

Should the person be found deceased, the investigating officer will handle the case as a death investigation and inform the family accordingly.”

“It is crucial to remember that every missing person case is unique and requires a tailored approach to ensure the best possible outcome.”
