U16A hockey team wins big at national tournament

The U16A Girls Eastern Gauteng hockey team has emerged victorious at the recent National Tournament, clinching the gold medal in the B Section.

The girls Eastern Gauteng Hockey Association (EGHA) U16A team emerged victorious at the recent national tournament in Bloemfontein, clinching the gold medal in the B division.

The team was composed of the top 16 secondary school hockey players from the Ekurhuleni region, with players hailing from schools like Boksburg High and St Dominic’s Catholic School for Girls.

The team trained diligently twice a week and played friendly matches at home before heading to Bloemfontein for the national tournament.

According to Charne Black, EGHA coach, the tournament featured two sections, each with 16 teams divided into two pools.

“Every team played five games in four days before the playoffs and finals. Eastern Gauteng’s pool included Northern Freestate, North West, Limpopo, KZN Inlands, and Eastern Province.

“Despite the tough competition, the Eastern Gauteng team remained unbeaten.

“The players exhibited strength, courage, and a strong work ethic, giving their best efforts in every match.

“After four days of intense competition, the Eastern Gauteng team topped their pool and advanced to the playoffs.

“On the fifth day, the team secured a victory in their playoff game, securing their place in the finals against KZN Inlands.

“In a thrilling match, the Eastern Gauteng team emerged victorious, winning the gold medal and earning promotion to the A division for the following year.

“Congratulations to all these players and to their schools, which they have represented as leaders and players in our province.”
