Empowering lives through martial arts

The club offers training sessions at a local church that has embraced its mission, providing a safe and nurturing space for the youth's growth and development.

Ekon Shai Karate established two years ago, has quickly become a vital part of the Ramaphosa neighbourhood.

The club has 10 students and offers training at a local church, which has helped them to embrace their mission of providing a safe and nurturing space for growth and development.

Shihan Moeti Holomo, driven by his passion for martial arts and a desire to develop others, founded the karate club.

His nearly four decades of experience in martial arts began at the Eddie Cave Kickboxing Academy in Cape Town.

He is now a cornerstone of the community’s efforts to foster discipline, respect and personal growth.

Reflecting on his evolution from competitor to instructor, Holomo said he no longer fights, but trains.

“This transition allows me to impart not only martial arts techniques but also its profound philosophy to my students.

“My extensive background is proof of my dedication and skill. I have trained in karate, kickboxing and Thai boxing, showcasing a diverse and comprehensive understanding of various martial arts disciplines.”

For Holomo, establishing Ekon Shai Karate within a local church reflects his vision of creating a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.

“The church serves as more than just a training space; it is a community hub where individuals from diverse backgrounds come together to learn and grow.”

“At Ekon Shai Karate, the focus extends beyond physical training.”

Holomo integrates mental discipline and respect into every session, teaching his students the values of perseverance, humility, and respect for others.

“My approach resonates deeply with many, as I believe martial arts can be a powerful tool for personal development.

“Training is not just about learning how to fight; it’s about building character and confidence,“ he explains.

The classes attract a diverse group of participants, from children as young as seven, eager to learn self-defence to adults seeking a new fitness routine.

Holomo’s ability to connect with his students, regardless of age or skill level, is a hallmark of his teaching style.

His patience and encouragement create an atmosphere where everyone feels empowered to challenge themselves and strive for improvement.

As Ekon Shai Karate continues to grow, Holomo envisions expanding the program to include more advanced training sessions and community outreach initiatives.

“I hope to inspire more individuals to embrace the discipline and benefits of martial arts.

“My goal is to create champions, not just in karate but in life,”
