Viljoen feeds 50 on birthday

This event was also part of observing Mandela Day, which encourages acts of kindness and community service to honour the legacy of Nelson Mandela.

Clayton Viljoen, the founder of the Urban Ruins Community Centre, celebrated his birthday by giving meals to 50 underprivileged individuals at the centre on July 20.

This event was also part of observing Mandela Day.

Viljoen, known for his dedication to uplifting those in need, chose to celebrate his birthday selflessly.

“For my birthday, I wanted to serve people food with dignity. It’s about making a difference and showing humanity to those who need it most.

“The event, which saw 200 people attend, was made more special with the support of Spur Birchwood.

The restaurant contributed by sending its waiters to assist with the service, ensuring everyone received their meals with the utmost care and respect.”

Darrel Gower, the manager of Spur Birchwood, was particularly moved by Viljoen’s initiative.

“I saw a post about Clayton wanting to host this event for his birthday and was immediately interested.

“He is so selfless, and his actions embody the spirit of Mandela Day. Why not support someone making a significant difference and showing humanity at its best?”

The Urban Ruins Community Centre, known for its various outreach programmes, was the perfect setting for the celebrations.

The centre, which regularly engages in community-building activities, was bustling with volunteers and residents, all coming together to ensure the event’s success.

Throughout the day, attendees were treated to delicious meals and heartfelt interactions, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
