Social media scams on the rise: Reiger Park SAPS warns of lurking dangers

Reiger Park SAPS has issued a stern warning to the public about the dangers of meeting with strangers they encounter on social media platforms.

Reiger Park SAPS is warning the public about the dangers of meeting with strangers they encounter on social media platforms.

According to Reiger SAPS spokesperson Constable Johannes Msimanga, this type of social media-enabled crime has become increasingly prevalent in the area.

He explained the typical modus operandi involves criminals luring unsuspecting victims through online marketplaces like Facebook Marketplace.

“The ‘seller’ arranges to meet the interested buyer at a specific location, but when the buyer arrives they are met by a young man who then takes them to a secluded spot.

“It is at this secondary location where the victim is accosted by armed criminals who rob them of their belongings and force them to transfer money from their mobile banking apps. In some cases, the victims also had their vehicles stolen.

“We have handled numerous reports from people, and the situation is worsening. Not a week goes by without someone coming who reports a case.”

Advice for online shoppers
Msimanga urges the public to be cautious when engaging in online transactions, especially those facilitated through social media platforms.

They advise consumers to:
• Always verify the buyer or seller’s online profile before proceeding.
• Avoid disclosing personal information.
• Refrain from meeting in secluded areas and instead opt for public spaces.
“If you have doubts, it is best to end the conversation online and not pursue the transaction further.
“We are urging social media users to be responsible and refrain from posting misleading content that can instil fear within the community.
“We are encouraging the public to report information on crime and criminality to the Crime Stop toll-free number 08600 10111.”
