Community of Hope Multipurpose Centre expands services nationally

This significant development marks a new chapter for the centre, which has been a cornerstone of community support and development since its inception in 1997.

The Community of Hope Multipurpose Centre (formerly Reiger Park Community Crisis Centre) has officially expanded its services to the Eastern and Western Cape.

This significant development marks a new chapter for the centre, which has been a cornerstone of community support and development since its inception in 1997.

Centre director Elaine Appies said the centre was originally established to care for senior citizens after a needs analysis indicated this as a critical priority.

“Pension payouts were done at the post office and pensioners often had to endure harsh weather conditions while waiting, so we moved the pension point to the shelter and comfort of the Apostolic Faith Mission Church.

“This venue provided a dignified space where senior citizens could sit and enjoy a cup of tea while collecting their pensions.

“Over the years, the centre expanded its scope of services in response to the evolving needs of the community.”

Appies said recognising a decline in family values and an increase in social issues, such as homelessness and destitution, the centre took bold steps to connect vulnerable individuals with various government departments.

By fostering a sense of self-worth and encouraging community members to reclaim their rightful places in society, the centre has played a crucial role in community building in Reiger Park (wards 34 and 42), an area surrounded by eight informal settlements.

In 2019, during the AGM, a decision was made to rename the Reiger Park Community Crisis Centre the Community of Hope Multipurpose Centre.

This change reflected the centre’s broader mission of bringing hope to the community through the implementation of new programmes.

The centre aims to become a beacon of hope, with a national footprint that addresses the urgent needs of humanity, opportunities, people and education (HOPE).

Key initiatives and programmes

Appies highlighted that the centre’s mission to protect and uplift humanity involves tackling various forms of abuse and violence.

“We emphasise the importance of creating opportunities for beneficiaries to become self-sustainable, rather than dependent on the centre or the government.

“By fostering skills and encouraging the pay it forward mentality, we aim to develop self-sustainable communities.”

Appies added that education plays a pivotal role in this transformation, serving as a tool to change mindsets, transfer skills, and promote collaboration.

Appies went on to say that the Centre advocates for responsible citizenship and is committed to taking its services to rural and semi-rural areas.

“This outreach is crucial in addressing unhealthy living conditions in urban townships and creating sustainable environments,” said Appies.

New constitution and name change
The centre’s expansion is underpinned by a new constitution, which includes:

• Psycho-social support for families, encompassing HIV support, poverty alleviation, and early childhood development (ECD) for the best interest of the child.

• Comprehensive programmes addressing all forms of abuse, though funding is still needed for these initiatives.

• The ambition to establish a national footprint and ensure sustainable community development.

Highlighted programmes

1. Community food gardens (G4G): Promoting local food production and self-reliance.

2. Roots to route (Kasi Tourism): Encouraging tourism in local communities to boost economic growth.

3. Youth with consciousness (UNI): Engaging youth in meaningful activities to foster a sense of purpose and responsibility.

Appies said for the past 27 years, the Community of Hope Multipurpose Centre has dedicated itself to community transition and development.

“Our expansion to the Eastern and Western Cape signifies a commitment to extending our reach and sharing our expertise with the rest of South Africa.

“By training children and supporting families, we aim to build a healthier, more sustainable future for all.”
