Help players’ dream come true

They need to raise enough funds before departing for Europe in July 12.

The Germany International Soccer (GIS) Academy East Rand U17 captain, Sphesihle Masiba, believes playing in the Gothia Cup in Sweden would help elevate his career and those of his teammates.

Masiba and five teammates will form part of the GIS squad selected to participate in this international youth tournament in Gothenburg from July 14 to 20.

“It means a lot to me. There aren’t many opportunities for young players like us to make it to the big leagues in SA. To play for one of the big teams, you must have connections,” said Masiba.

The GIS held a fundraiser at Wordsworth High on June 29 to help the youngsters’ dreams of playing in the cup become a reality. They need to raise enough funds before departing for Europe on July 12.

“I’d like the community to help us raise more funds to make our dream possible. It is a big opportunity for us. We would appreciate anything that comes from you,” Masiba said.

He added, “If we go to Sweden, it would be better because there’ll be international scouts. When we return home, the big guns will recognise us and start taking us seriously because of how we would have performed in the Gothia Cup.”

They are in the B17 group 22 with Swedish side Floda BoIF, SAGC CESTAS from France and English team St Lawrence.

Masiba said the tournament would give them exposure and build their brands as upcoming football, adding that the experience would be valuable, especially as they look to build momentum in the Gold One League they currently participate in.

The goalkeeper’s teammate, Showen Gordon, lamented the limited opportunities for players his age in SA, saying that he’s wanted to play in Europe from a young age.

“I’m looking forward to this tournament. I’ve always wanted to play overseas. It will help us understand the game better and improve our game when we return,” said Gordon.

Mzamani Mabaso explained that participating in the tournament would help make his career meaningful because the standard of football in Europe is higher.

“I’m blessed to be in this position. These opportunities don’t come every day. It’s an opportunity for us to grasp, and at this moment, it means everything. It means a lot for us to be here,” he said.
