Tshepo ya Sechaba brings fitness and friendship to Dawn Park elderly

The session, which takes place from Monday to Thursday, aims to promote physical fitness and social interaction among the elderly.

Tshepo ya Sechaba (Hope of the Nation), an NPO dedicated to the care and well-being of the elderly, held a gym session for its members on June 19.

The sessions, which takes place from Monday to Thursday, aim to promote physical fitness and social interaction among the elderly.

The founder of the organisation, Cynthia Nhlapho, emphasised the importance of embracing the elderly and incorporating them into the outside world.

“We believe that the elderly must be given the opportunity to work out and socialise with their peers.

“The gym sessions are designed to cater to the specific needs of the elderly, providing a safe and supportive environment for them to stay fit and active.

“By providing a platform for social interaction and physical activity, we are helping to improve the overall quality of life for our members,” said Nhlapho.

The organisation’s gym sessions are led by trained instructors who specialise in working with the elderly.

These instructors are equipped to handle the unique needs and limitations of the elderly, ensuring that each participant receives a tailored workout that is both challenging and enjoyable.

Nhlapho said the sessions are also designed to be social.

“This social aspect is crucial for the elderly, as it helps to combat loneliness and isolation, which are common issues faced by many seniors,” said Nhlapho.

Many attendees expressed their joy and gratitude for the programme.

One regular participant shared her experience, “I look forward to these sessions every week. It’s not just about the exercise; it’s about meeting friends and feeling a sense of belonging. It’s something I cherish deeply.

“For many seniors, the opportunity to socialise is just as important as the physical activity.

“The sessions offer a safe and welcoming environment where seniors can form friendships, share stories, and support each other,” she said.

Nhlapho said these instructors guide participants through exercises that enhance flexibility, strength, and balance, which are essential for maintaining independence and preventing falls.

“The positive impact of these sessions is evident in the increased energy levels and improved mood of the participants. Beyond physical health, we also address mental well-being.

“Each session incorporates elements of mindfulness and relaxation, helping seniors manage stress and anxiety. This holistic approach ensures that participants leave feeling rejuvenated both physically and mentally.”

Nhlapho said they aim to expand the programme to include more activities, such as outdoor walks, dance classes, and educational workshops on nutrition and health.

They also hope to establish similar programmes in neighbouring communities, spreading the benefits of fitness and socialisation to more seniors.
