Sangweni and Van Jaarsveld on top at Cross The Line
Sakhiwe clocked 01:08:43 for the men's title while Van Jaarsveld won the women's race in 01:25:56.
Sakhile Sangweni and Kate van Jaarsveld beat a packed field to win the Cross The Line Half Marathon, sponsored by Food Lover’s Market, men’s and women’s 21.1km titles on Northrand Road on May 19.
Sangweni, who was runner-up in the men’s 10km race at the third CGA cross-country league meeting the previous day, displayed superb form to dominate the men’s after coasting to victory under 69 minutes.
The Gallopers top runner showed his dominance on a flat deck, with small up-hills as he clocked 3:16min/km to win the race in 01:08:43, 2:35 ahead runner-up Tshepiso Khati of Old Edwardian AC.
Thabo Motloung of 32Gi completed the top three in 01:11:50.
Local lass Kate van Jaarsveld clocked 01:25:56 to scoop the women’s half marathon. Behind her was her Nedbank Running Club teammate Tebogo Mokgosinyane, crossed the line 04:17 after the Farrarmere resident while Azelle Grove made it a Nedbank RC top three after coming in third in 01:29:08.
In the 10km, Maxed elite runner Karabo Ntholeng and Simonay Weitz from TUT AC grabbed the top honours in the men’s and women’s events.
Ntholeng clocked 31:13 to scoop the gold in the men’s race. Behind him was Qhubeka AC’s Ziyavuya Mwahla, who completed the race in 32:48. Nedbank’s Keagan Botha completed the top three in 34:38.
Weitz, winner of the Benoni Northerns Night Race in October, won the women’s race in 37:38. Samantha Coetzer was second in 37:51 and Luca de Waal grabbed the bronze in 38:10.
The race attracted over 1 500 runners, beating last year’s turnout, which was under 1 000.
