Makoro to complete his 30th Comrades Marathon

Makoro made his Comrades debut in 1992 and has accumulated nine silver, 13 Bill Rowan, five bronze and two Robert Mtshali medals.

The Boksburg Athletic Club (BAC) veteran Josiah Makoro will earn his Comrades Marathon triple green number when he completes his 30th run in the up-run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg on June 9.

Makoro made his debut in the ultimate human race in the 1992 up-run won by Jetman Msutu and Frances van Blerk. He completed the race in 07:59:22, earning himself a bronze medal.

Since his first race, he has scooped nine silver, 13 Bill Rowan, five bronze and two Robert Mtshali medals, achieving his best result in the 2000 up-run, when he clocked 07:06:12 for a silver medal.

Last year, he completed his 29th race in 09:09:22 for the Robert Mtshali medal.

Besides Makoro, the BAC’s Michael Sithole, Bronwyn Strydom, Werner van der Berg and Wiehan van der Berg will also go for their milestones in the 97th edition of the ultramarathon.

Sithole and Strydom will achieve their double green numbers for their 20th runs while Werner and Wiehan will earn their first green numbers for their 10th Comrades events when they complete the race at the Hollywoodbets Scotsville Racecourse in Pietermaritzburg.

Sithole debuted in the 1998 up-run, clocking 08:46:31 to earn a bronze. He has grabbed five silver, five Bill Rowan, seven bronze and Vic Clapham medals.

His best result was in the 2006 edition when he completed the race in 07:05:30 for his fourth silver medal.

Bronwyn Strydom will run her 20th Comrades Marathon on June 9.

Strydom has earned 14 bronze, three Bill Rowan and two Vic Clapham medals since her maiden race in 2000, where she limped to the finish alongside her mom in 11:51:20.

Werner made his debut in 2011 and has since received two silver, six Bill Rowan and a single Robert Mtshali medal.

In his first race, he finished in 08:20:25 for a Bill Rowan medal and achieved his PB in the down-run after clocking 07:21:16, for a silver medal.

Josiah Makoro will earn his triple green number at this year’s Comrades Marathon.

Wiehan has earned five Bill Rowan, two silver, one bronze and one Robert Mtshali medal since his first race in 2012, where he finished the event in 09:45:16 for a bronze.

His best result was in 2018 when he finished the down-run in 07:03:36 for his second silver. Last year he completed the race in 09:33:20.

The BAC will represented by 66 runners in the race, with 10 members making their debut while nine will go for their back-to-back medals.

The chairman’s breakfast will be held on June 2 at 07:00 after the club’s morning run.
