The Benoni Indians Baseball Club chairperson Shuan Deyzel said he is delighted with the way the club’s junior and senior players performed during the National Baseball Championships (NBC) in Gqeberha, last month.
Deyzel congratulated all the players selected to represent Gauteng in the tournament, adding they were thrilled after some won individual accolades while others made it to the team of the tournament.
Troy Branders won the relief pitcher award and Luke de Lange was the outfielder of the tournament in the U12 division.
In the U15s, Lucy Miller was the girls’ designated hitter of the tournament while Keagan Merifield was the best-starting pitcher. Tatum White and John Adams won awards for best shortstop.
In the seniors’ tournament, relief pitcher Aiden McAllister was recognised for his outstanding performance for the Gauteng senior team.
“We are proud of the dedication, talent and hard work displayed by the players. We look forward to supporting them in their future endeavours. Congratulations to all the players for their outstanding performances at the NBC,” said Deyzel.
The club’s U12 players, Jarred Long and Carly Steyn, were selected to represent South Africa at the 30th World Children’s Baseball Fair in Kukuoka, Japan from July 28 to August 5.
“The club commends these two talented players and wishes them the best of luck as they represent their country on the international stage,” he said.
NBC outcomes
Gauteng A were runners-up in the senior women’s and men’s tournaments.
Cape Town A beat Gauteng A 4-1 in the men’s final while the women’s final was a one-sided affair with Cape Town Women winning 10-4 for the gold.
In the juniors’ tournament, Gauteng girls won the gold in the U18 and U15 divisions, beating Western Cape 15-0 and 16-9 in the final, respectively.
In the boys’ division, the Western Cape dominated, winning the U12 trophy and convincingly beating Gauteng U15A 12-1 in the final while also outclassing Gauteng U18A 8-0.
The Gauteng U10 boys salvaged a gold for the province after edging the Western Cape 14-13 in a thrilling final to stop the Cape Province’s total dominance of the competition.
