Old Bens reserves beat BSI

Jarred Taylor scored early in the first half and Ntokozo Goba added another as Old Bens grabbed all the three points.

Goals by Jarred Taylor and Ntokozo Goba guided The Old Bens reserves to a 2-0 win against Balderstone Sports Institute (BSI) at Currin Park on March 2.

Taylor struck in the first half while Goba scored in the second stanza as the home side beat a young BSI side, led by former PSL coach Zeca Marques, to register their first three points of the season.

Junior Mokoma was solid in midfield before being subbed in the second half.

After a slow start, with the visitors seeing much of the ball, Bens began to take control with Thabiso Makhopha and Josh Hurst running the affairs in the middle.

Despite dominating the ball possession, chances were far and in between for the home side. It took a cross from Mahin Dharmair from the halfway mark for Bens to open the scoring.

The right-back played it from deep and a BSI defender rushed out to clear the ball, but Taylor made a block and then pounced on the loose ball to give his team the lead.

The hosts fluffed another chance which could have put them in a more comfortable position, but Dominic Prinsloo had other ideas.

The ball was flighted from the left to the right by left-back Mayaba Mulima and found Prinsloo unmarked on the right side of the BSI six-yard box. The player put it down but sent his shot above the posts.

Taylor had another opportunity to increase the lead but shot straight to the keeper. Mulima played another cross-field pass, which was cleared straight to Taylor. The striker chested it down but blasted the ball into the hands of the keeper.

BSI’s Reece Modise was solid in defence for his team.

The game went into the break with the hosts in the lead and the second half began with the script. BSI had much of the ball early on. They had their real sniff when Luther Ntlangani reacted slowly to a thorough pass as the Bens keeper rushed out of his area to make the save.

Justice Nkaliki squandered a clear-cut chance after choosing to take responsibility off himself when presented with an opportunity to score.

Makgopha closed in from the right, ran across and laid the ball for Nkaliki who was unmarked inside the BSI box, but the winger elected to pass the ball to Taylor instead of shooting.

BSI had several chances to equalise, but nothing materialised as Goba ensured Old Bens grabbed all three points after making it two deep in the second half.

In the late game, the Old Bens seniors lost 3-1 to the BSI seniors.
