Sabres take victory against Scimitars

They will meet the Kempton Renegades in the final.

The Benoni Sabres grabbed a 43-run win over the Benoni Scimitars to advance to the East Rand Veterans League final at the Northerns B field on January 20.

Batting first, Craig Turton notched up an unbeaten 68 off 71 deliveries, and Nico Minnaar scored a quick 51 off 28 as the Sabres posted 245 in their innings.

Jan Grobbelaar, Ephraim Nyawo and Mohammed Teladia were the Scimitars’ pick of the bowlers with two wickets each, while Millen Volment got a single scalp.

In response, Roland Braun’s 79 off 59, which included eight boundaries and two maximums, was in vain because the Scimitars could only muster 202 runs in their 30 overs.

Kyle Smit led the Sabres’ attack to end the innings with 4/31. He took the wickets of Braun, Nyawo, Andre Steyn and Alwyn Labuschagne.

Helping Smit were Tharushen Naidoo and Jaco Minnaar, who took two wickets each as the Scimitars ended the match on 202/8.

The Sabres will meet the Kempton Renegades in the final.
