Boxer wins first national title

She has a record of seven wins, five losses and two draws in her 14 fights since her debut in 2011.

Local pugilist Bonita van Jaarsveldt dethroned Raider Muleba to win the SA lightweight title following a split decision victory at Vodaworld in Midrand on September 30.

Van Jaarsveldt won the 10-round bout on points in the main event of the Rise of Women in Boxing series, beating the Limpopo boxer, affectionately known as The Earthquake, to land her first national title since turning pro in 2011.

The 33-year-old went into this match full of confidence after pummelling Pamela Matunga in March during the Battle of the Warriors 9, and it was always going to be difficult for Muleba who hadn’t fought since 2022.

This was the third match between the two boxers. They first squared off in December 2020 with the Benonian claiming a unanimous decision win and Muleba avenged that loss with a points win in their second bout last year.

In her 14 fights since her debut, Van Jaarsveldt has won seven bouts, with one knock-out victory, lost five and drew two.
