Be well informed about breast cancer

The incidence of breast cancer among South African women is reportedly increasing, and it is identified as one of the most common cancers among women in South Africa.

As we are about to wrap up Breast Cancer Awareness Month, residents are urged to attend an educational campaign to be held at the Boksburg Library.

The event, organised by a group of trainee librarians at the centre, will be held at the library’s auditorium at 11:00 tomorrow and it’s a walk-in service.
Speakers, and experts from the healthcare sector, will be talking about screening and how often it should be done, the importance of early detection, signs, symptoms, risk factors, preventative measures and more.

The event organiser said they decided to host the event as they believe that no person, particularly women, should be left in the dark about breast cancer. Apart from the planned event, the team showed their solidarity by wearing the pink ribbon.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an annual month-long observance. Many public and private organisations across the country have been involved in a whole host of activities to help educate more people about the risks and signs of the disease of the breasts.

According to the South African Government online publication, www.gov.za, the incidence of breast cancer among South African women is increasing, and it is one of the most common cancers among women in South Africa.
The publication shared the following facts about breast cancer:

Early detection of the condition can lead to effective treatment and a positive prognosis. About 90% of patients survive for many years after diagnosis when breast cancer is detected at the early stages.
Regular self-breast examinations and regular mammograms are key to early detection.
Presenting yourself early for treatment may result in more effective treatment, leading to a reduction in pain and suffering and a significant decrease in the loss of life.
