Belvedere duo helps SA to fourth place at cheerleading worlds
They competed in the junior co-ed category, which was won by Team Ecuador.
Quano Erasmus and JJ Diamond from Belvedere School in Farrarmere represented South Africa at the International Cheer Union (ICU) Junior World and World Cheerleading Championships at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, USA, in April.
Erasmus and Diamond, part of Belvedere’s cheerleading team, formed part of the national squad that finished fourth in the junior co-ed advanced category, which is a mixed-gender category with males stunting and females flying.
South Africa fell just short of a medal place. Ecuador won gold, with Brazil coming second and Chile third.
This year’s championships saw a total of 12 509 cheerleaders from 517 teams from 21 countries compete in different categories.
The competition will return again in April at the same venue.
