SANBS needs your As, Bs and Os

According to the SANBS website, blood stocks are significantly low.

As we approach the festive season when blood is in high demand, the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) called on community members to roll up their sleeves and donate blood.

Local donor practitioner Peter Mafela said they needed support at the East Rand Mall donor centre.

“Donors are needed to come through and help us save lives

“Less than 1% of South Africans are active blood donors. A unit of blood only lasts 42 days after donation. For this reason, it is crucial for donors to donate regularly.

“Every unit of blood can save at least three lives because the blood gets separated into red blood cells, plasma and platelets,” Mafela added.

The East Rand Mall donor centre operates from 10:00 to 18:00 on weekdays and 09:00 on weekends and public holidays.

Donors must meet the minimum criteria for donating blood, which are:
• Weigh at least 50kg.
• Be aged 16 to 65.
• Be in good health.
• Lead a sexually safe lifestyle.
Consider your blood safe for transfusion.
You may only donate every 56 days.
