Take part in night race and glow in the dark

The race take part at Benoni Northerns Sports Club on October 25, at 19:00.

Bright Mikolongwe has lauded the Benoni Northerns Night Race for inspiring Benonians who had never run before, to strap up and take to the road.

Mikolongwe said the fun activities and colourful manner of the race was a crucial drawcard, adding it was an attractive element that removed the usual seriousness always seen in road running events.

The Benoni Northerns Athletic Club (BNAC) top runner expects this year’s event on October 25 at Benoni Northerns Sports Club to be packed with runners of all fitness levels, dressed up in various colourful outfits, with their headlamps lighting up the streets of the community.

Although he won’t participate, he will line up along the course as part of the BNAC’s marshals to ensure every runner makes it to the finish unscathed.

“The night race is one of my favourite races. Although I won’t be taking part, you will find me somewhere along the route with my red flag cheering on the runners and showing them where to go.

“It’s such a special race because everyone comes out to have fun. The participants also like to dress up in different colourful costumes, wear headlamps and glow in the dark,” he said.

Bright Mikolongwe runs to the finish line in the Boroughs of Bedfordview race on September 25.
He finished in second place in the men’s 15km.

The affable runner won the Significance Gather Run’s 10km race in Kempton Park on September 23 after clocking 32:34 for the gold medal. He was back on the road again on September 25 – this time at the Boroughs of Bedfordview 15km race, where he clocked 51:28 to finish in second place.

He said the night race was important for community building and its laidback manner was the best test for novice runners.

“Our club likes to get the whole community involved. You will probably see many faces you know along the route. There will be music and dancing as well.

“It’s good for those who want to walk and enjoy the fun with their families. This race inspires the people in Benoni to start running and enjoying the sport instead of being involved in wrongdoing,” said Mikolongwe.

The race, sponsored by Jan Jordaan Attorneys, will include the 10km event and the 5km fun race for children and those who want to keep fit.

The gun will be fired at 19:00.
