Pedestrian struck, killed by a taxi

A man (24) from Rieger Park died after being hit by a taxi at Rondebult Road and Middel Street, at about 20:00 on July 29.

It is alleged that the taxi skipped the red traffic light and hit the pedestrian crossing the road.

The Rieger Park community medic and chaplain, Kevin Koopman, was the first to respond to the scene. He found the deceased with fatal injuries and he was declared dead on scene by the paramedics.

Koopman said the taxi driver was still at the scene when they arrived and the deceased is a Malawian-born resident of Rieger Park.

One of the deceased’s landlords said he had two daughters back home and a brother.
