WATCH: Youth encouraged to act against GBV

Sexual abuse, domestic violence, substance abuse, HIV/Aids, juvenile delinquency, and prioritising education were among the topics discussed.

The South African National Civil Organisation (Sanco) in Ekurhuleni hosted a campaign to raise gender-based violence (GBV) awareness and other social ills among the youth in its Bavumile branch in Comet, Ward 33.

During the event, hosted in partnership with the Boksburg SAPS on June 17, dozens of placard-wielding youngsters, mainly learners, community leaders, Sanco and SAPS representatives marched through the streets of the former Comet Mine Quarters before assembling at the sports field to proceed with the activities of the day.

Sanco’s Tshwarelo Mohlaodi-Dlamini explained that the campaign’s goal was to increase awareness of GBV and empower and improve the lives of young people in the ward through educational activities.

With informative talks, demonstrations and distributed pamphlets, the youngsters learned information that could help them identify and react to GBV in their own lives.

Sanco’s Tshwarelo Mohlaodi-Dlamini was among the guest speakers who shared information on how the youth could identify and act against gender-based violence in their lives.

The attendees were also encouraged to support victims of GBV and report the perpetrators to parents, teachers, community leaders or the police.
