#YouthDay: Don’t miss out on these Youth Day celebrations in Boksburg

This year National Youth Day and Youth Month will be celebrated under the theme: 'Accelerating youth economic emancipation for a sustainable future'.

This Friday, June 16, marks 47 years since the Soweto uprising when thousands of young people from the township in the south west of Johannesburg and many other areas took to the streets in 1976 to protest against a directive from the then government that Afrikaans had to be used as a medium of instruction in secondary schools.

Following the advent of democracy in 1994, the new democratic government declared June 16 as National Youth Day and June as Youth Month. This is to remember those who lost their lives, and to focus on the barriers faced by today’s youth in their path to secure a better future.
Here are some of the youth celebrations you can take part in in Boksburg:
Local NPO and Pick n Pay Towers join hands to help the needy
The Humanity Foundation and Pick n Pay Towers have organised a drive to collect food, toiletries and sanitary towels to benefit the needy youth.
The event, with a special focus on nappies and sanitary pads, will be held at the Pick n Pay Towers in North Rand Road, from 09:00 to 13:00 on June 16 and 17.
Residents are urged to support the initiative by donating the aforementioned items and other basic necessities at the drop point.
The team will also be accepting pre-loved children’s books, children’s clothing and baby formula.
The collected items will in turn be distributed among the local charity organisations that take care of youngsters including children’s care centres, and those that provide shelter to victims of gender-based violence. For more information on how you can support the initiative, contact Pierre Marneweck on 082 610 7593.

The Dawn Park SAPS Youth Desk, in partnership with People’s Faith-Based Organisation, will on June 16 be hosting a talent show at the Philasande Community Centre in Villa Liza.

The event organisers believe that the festivities of the day will encourage more youngsters to discover themselves and take part in meaningful activities instead of roaming the dangerous streets besieged with dangerous substances.
