In the light of Child Protection Week (May 29 to June 5), the Advertiser asked a few locals if they think enough is being done to protect children's rights.

Child Protection Week is 29 May to 5 June. We asked some locals whether they thought enough is being done to uphold children’s rights in South Africa.

 

Clive Retief: There will never be enough done because too much is happening and nobody cares. Kids are being abused and murdered on a daily basis. People just talk but don’t do anything.

Margaret Bonaparte: There is certainly not enough being done to protect children. South Africa is not child-friendly, and it’s extremely sad. People should be made aware of this every day, not just for a week.

Francinah Mpai: Children need a stable home. Other than that, I do not think their rights are protected. A lot of children are homeless and always at robots begging for food. Where are their parents? Where are the social workers that claim to have a child’s best interest at heart?

Zama Mthembu: There is not enough being done because children are still getting abused on a daily basis and it’s unacceptable. Kids should be able to be safe.
