Drug crisis still haunts residents of Dawn Park, Villa Liza, Windmill Park

Drugs are killing South Africa’s future leaders.

Since the Dawn Park SAPS arrested suspected drug dealers in Dawn Park, Villa Liza and Windmill Park in the past months, the residents in these areas believe the police must do more to eradicate the drug crisis.

In the latest incident, the police arrested a man (51) on Cypress Street, Dawn Park, suspected to be a drug dealer.

A resident of Villa Liza, who asked to remain anonymous, said she had seen suspected drug dealers arrested in their area, but they didn’t stay in prison for very long.

“We, as the community of Villa Liza, have lost hope in the justice system. We even suspect the drug dealers work with the police and lawyers. The drug crisis affects us as parents because most of our children are on drugs. They get addicted to drugs and terrorise the community.

“Their addictions lead them to steal and rob people. Some of them even die from mob justice, which is heartbreaking,” explained the community member.

She said she wants to see changes in her area but is sceptical that she will ever see them.

“We are afraid to report these drug dealers because they get arrested and released. Thereafter, they come to attack us as whistleblowers, and you will never know who revealed your name to them.

“The problem with this drug crisis is we are losing our young leaders. The government must intervene in this issue. I know the drug issue not only affects us in Villa Liza but the whole country,” she stated.

A resident of Windmill Park, who also wanted to remain anonymous, said even though the police arrested the drug dealers, there weren’t any changes in their area.

“I don’t believe there will ever be change with the drug issue. No one is willing to do anything to stop the drug issue, and honestly, I believe many people in high places benefit from this drug syndicate.

“They have turned our children against us by feeding them drugs. We don’t feel safe in our homes because our children use drugs. They steal from us, and they forcefully want money to buy drugs. I have experienced and witnessed that,” she concluded.
