Cosmos caters for senior citizens with a daycare

Leave your elderlies at Cosmos for a day full of fun activities.

Cosmos Old Age Home in Van Dyk Park is extending a hand to senior citizens by creating a daycare service at the cost of R300 per day, from June 1.

The daycare is for persons 60 years and older who do not reside in the home.

It is aimed at senior citizens who are alone during the day, to keep them busy with something else besides staying indoors with nothing to do.

This daycare allows people to bring their elderly family members to the home to spend a day with other senior citizens while partaking in different activities.

Seen with the knitted items by the elderly at cosmos is Yvonne Paul and her visitor.

While at the daycare, the elders socialise and engage in several activities, including watching movies, colouring in, bingo, hairdressing, knitting and more.

“The aim is to make sure that the elderly do not feel lonely. They can socialise and we make sure they are taken care of rather than family having to leave them alone at home and wondering if they are safe,” said Cosmos CEO Susan Cilliers.

“Having a home care worker is expensive and some families cannot afford to permanently leave their elderly with us, which is why we created this daycare.

“Hopefully, as time goes on, the elderly attending our daycare will see the benefits of what we offer and want to move here permanently,” said social worker Mampho Mbethe.

She pointed out that they also have day beds where the elderly can rest if needed during the day.

“Everyone is welcome and can either call, email or even walk in to bring their family members to daycare. They will receive breakfast, lunch and snacks as part of the programme,” she added.

Cosmos Old Age Home is also looking for volunteers to help take care of the residents and daycare members, as well as a gym and yoga instructor so that they can get their fitness classes up and running again.
