FAMSA East Rand has a new director

She wants to improve the work flow at FAMSA.

The new director of FAMSA East Rand, Nontobeko Magwaza (32), aims to bring stability to the organisation with the wealth of experience she has obtained throughout her career as a social worker.

She took up her responsibility on April 3 after serving as a senior social worker in the FAMSA head office in Kempton Park from 2020 up until early 2023.

According to Magwaza, she became a social worker because she wanted to change the social ills in her homeland, Kwa Zulu-Natal (KZN). She noticed such struggles while growing up there.

“I grow up in Nongoma and I attended various schools. I acquired my bachelor of social work degree at Unisa in Durban, and later in 2019 I obtained a qualification in HIV and Aids studies.

“I joined the FAMSA organisation in 2018 as an intern after relocating from KZN. In 2019 I became a junior social worker. I was promoted to be a senior social worker and supervisor in 2020.”

She mentioned that she is excited to join FAMSA East Rand as a director.

“There are already challenges that I’m facing, but I want to overcome them as the new leader of the organisation.
“We don’t have enough money to sustain ourselves as an organisation and that is affecting our workflow. It’s even worse now after the Department of Social Development has reduced the funding money we used to get.

“I already have plans in place to resolve the issues we face. I have plans to seek funding from other organisations.
“My role as a director is to ensure the organisation runs smoothly by overseeing the work of its employees,” explained Magwaza.

Magwaza added that her line of duty as a social worker is to offer marriage and couple counselling.
“I mediate divorces, but I also ensure people enjoy healthy marriages. I preserve marriages.

“My future goal is to go back to my homeland and offer my services there. I want to help oppressed women because I believe if I can help them we will be able to address poverty that has been affecting my community members for a long time,” she concluded.
