The benefits of animal sterilization

The important benefit of sterilisation is to prevent unnecessary breeding, which prevents animals being born into unwanted homes.

This breaks the cycle of unwanted, stray and abandoned animals.

The Boksburg SPCA held their first pit bull terrier spay day on February 22 with 30 sponsored sterilisations.

Identipet offered a free microchip for each pit bull sterilised.

“A pit bull terrier is bred for animal-to animal combat. Some have very aggressive personalities that cannot be changed; it is genetic.

“Sterilising pit bulls is mainly for the prevention of breeding,” said Boksburg SPCA manager Vicky Finnemore, adding that sterilisation has several health benefits for animals.

“In female dogs it prevents urinary infections and decreases the chances of cancerous mammary tumours, and in male dogs it prevents testicular cancer and prostate problems.

“Animals like rabbits can also be sterilised to increase their life expectancy.

It also makes them calmer and easier to handle without them experiencing sexual frustration.

In larger animals, like horses, cows, goats and sheep, males are predominantly sterilised to prevent breeding.

Animals can be sterilised at veterinary clinics or at SPCAs and other animal welfare organisations that have clinics.
