#nationalshutdown: Mayor says city is still on high alert

10 000 tyres have been confiscated to date.

City of Ekurhuleni Mayor Tania Campbell and the MMC for Community Safety, Khathutshelo Rasilingwane, visited various wards to monitor the situation with regards to the national shutdown called by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) yesterday (March 20).

Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department personnel across the city have been on hand to assist with crime prevention and to maintain law and order.

Campbell said a few incidents of violence were reported, leading to 12 arrests with charges including public violence, intimidation and interfering with police duties on the R556 in Brackendowns.

“A total of 10 100 tyres have been confiscated to date and there has been minimal damage to municipal infrastructure,” she said.

“There remains a high police visibility across the city with static deployments at our Municipal Customer Care Centres and other potential hotspot areas. Law enforcement officials in conjunction with the Roads Department have assisted in the clearing of bricks and debris off effected roads.

“I would like to thank the taxi Industry, faith-based organisations, Community Police Forums and other stakeholders who have assisted in keeping the peace, and ensuring all our residents are safe,” Campbell concluded.
