‘City official’ arrested for possession of council power device

The electrical equipment worth R80000 was confiscated

The EMPD arrested a so-called municipal employee after he was found in possession of suspected stolen council-owned electrical equipment worth R80 000.

According to EMPD media liaison officer, Katlego Mphahlele, the man, who claimed he is a council employee in the energy department, was arrested in Boksburg after a tip-off to police about someone in possession of a high-voltage fault finder.

“EMPD officers were carrying out an observation at the intersection of Trichardts and Krynauw roads, following complaints of possible land invasion, when they were approached by concerned members of the public about a ‘municipal official’ who was seen with the council-owned electrical device after hours, while off-duty.

“Officers visited the suspect’s home, located in the vicinity, and that’s where a 64-year-old man failed to give a clear explanation about how he came to be in possession of the device. He was arrested and charged with possession of suspected stolen council-owned property,” said Mphahlele.

The EMPD is still trying to establish whether the suspect is indeed an employee of the city.
He is scheduled to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court.
