Women empowered in Reiger Park

The event was hosted as a wrap-up for all the Women's month initiatives.

The Reiger Park police, in partnership with Thusang Community Development, Reiger Park CPF and Community Safety, initiated a women empowerment programme at Victory Tabernacle Community Church on August 30.

The founder of Thusang Community Development, Lufuno Mudzuli said they noticed that a lot of women are being abused by their partners during the door-to-door campaigns that they do with the Reiger Park SAPS.

“We collaboratively hosted the empowerment programme with the SAPS and other stakeholders to alter the abusive conditions that women find themselves in lately. We are here to encourage women to be self-reliant and know their worth.

“We know that if women can be self-reliant the numbers of GBV, abuse and domestic violence cases will decrease.

“The event was initiated for 100 women, but scores of women came to the event and that is pleasing. More women came to the initiative than we anticipated,” said Mudzuli.

He also took the opportunity to thank all the stakeholders that supported the initiative.

Silvia Lawrence, an employee of Upward Spiral which sponsors Thusang Community Development, said they took part in the initiative because their company believes in giving back to the community.

“We are here to support all the women who are being abused. We are a company that strives for gender equality.”
She added that if every woman in South Africa can be empowered most of the ills in South Africa can be combated.

Zukiswa Hlakaza, who resides in Angelo informal settlement, said she came to the event to be empowered as a woman.

“I have learned a lot in the initiative about things we should prioritise as women. I also know now that I should stay away from an abusive relationship,” explained Hlakza.
