OR Tambo Airport runway closed due to veld fire

“The fire spilt over from the adjacent community in the airport precinct."

Ward 17 Clr Simon Lapping reported that information received indicates that responders are battling to contain the veld fire at OR Tambo Airport.

The airport also announced the temporary closure of runway 21L/03R due to the veld fire.

“The fire spilt over from the adjacent community in the airport precinct.

“Our fire and rescue team is onsite working to extinguish the fire,” OR Tambo Airport announced.

Lapping said that according to the ACSA, it is a big fire on the eastern side of the airport. It has resulted in the closure of the runway.

“ACSA has committed that there will be a full investigation into the cause of the fire and whether the firebreaks were compliant with section 12 of the National Veld and Forest Fire Act No 101 of 1998,” said Lapping.
