First Senzo suspect speaks out

Years later, Zamokuhle Mbatha's life is still stagnant.

Eight years after the incident, Vosloorus resident Zamokuhle Mbatha remains a person of interest in the Senzo Meyiwa murder case.

Mbatha was the first suspect to be arrested for the murder of the former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana captain who died after a shooting at the Vosloorus home of the mother of his girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo, on October 26, 2014.
Mbatha says the lengthy conclusion of the case has affected him and now wants the truth to come out.

“This matter has had a negative impact on my relationship with the community and will harm my child’s perception of his father. I want the case to be finalised and once they identify the true offender I want the police to apologise to me,” he said.

Speaking to the Advertiser at his home recently, Mbatha said he believes he was arrested only because he had dreadlocks, like one of the suspects the police identified.
“My life is stagnant since my release. I will only be able to relax if the true perpetrators are apprehended,” he said, adding the shooting happened in the middle of the night and he only found out about it the next day.

“The police did not tell me what I was arrested for and released me two weeks later. There was no concrete evidence to back up the arrest.
“This still bothers me because I cannot find employment as a result of the arrest,” said Mbatha.
“I sued the state and this claim has been going back and forth with no finalisation either.”
