WATCH: Invite CANSA to your office for Corporate Wellness Week

Employees should not underestimate their role in helping the public to lower their cancer risk.

Corporate Wellness Week takes place from July 4 to 8 and the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) urges employers to look after their own by inviting Cansa to the workplace.

Cansa can offer cancer screening and education around recognising the symptoms of cancer and lowering cancer risk. Screening also helps identify the risk for non-communicable diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes.

Gerda Strauss, Cansa’s head of service says, “Cancer has increased and is being diagnosed more frequently. It is important to do annual screening to enable early detection.

“Employees often neglect to do screening as they feel they are too busy. By bringing cancer screening to the workplace, employers can help maintain employee health and productivity levels.

“Employees should not underestimate their significant role in helping the public in lower their cancer risk and detect cancer early through allowing cancer screening in the workplace. It is about prioritising the health and well-being of the employee,” said Strauss.

“We do blood pressure tests, clinical breast examinations (to detect breast lumps), pap smears (liquid-based cervical cancer screening test for early diagnosis), prostate-specific antigen (PSA) tests (a blood test to assist with detecting prostate abnormalities), fotofinder examinations (mole mapping dermoscopy device to examine moles and spots on the skin) and a faecal occult home testing kit (to help indicate a growth/inflammation/bleeding in the digestive system, possibly colorectal cancer).”

Further services include health talks, exhibitions, and presentations. Cansa also offers comprehensive service with their lifestyle risk assessment, producing a company risk profile after each employee completes the assessment.

“In this way, employers can help ensure employees are aware of the changes they can make to lower their risk of cancer and other non-communicable diseases like heart disease and diabetes.

“Now is the time for employers to invest in the well-being of their staff, so contact us today and make a booking for a health risk assessment and screening,” Strauss concluded.

Make a booking on the Cansa website (www.Cansa.org.za) or email nbuwellness@Cansa.org.za.
