Crumbling N17 Bridge ‘a tragedy waiting to happen’

Concerned residents expressed outrage over the state of the bridge, saying it highlights poor maintenance of the infrastructure.

A section of a pedestrian bridge across the N17 in Van Dyk Park appears to be on the verge of collapsing.

This bridge is used daily by residents, including school children.

This photo taken on June 13 shows a concrete slab crumbling from the pedestrian bridge’s side.

One concerned resident, who on May 25 alerted the Advertiser to the imminent disaster, described the state of the bridge as ‘as accident waiting to happen’.
“The current state of this bridge has been reported, but nothing has been done. It will only be a matter of time before an accident happen,” she said.

This publication visited the site on June 13 and it appears that the section of the bridge in question shows signs of cracks.
Upon further investigation, it appears that a vehicle accident could have caused the damage to the foot bridge.
Evidence of a crash shows that something hit one of the bridge’s concrete pylons, leaving the section of the bridge lopsided, with concrete slabs crumbling from the bridge’s side and the damaged pylon.

The pedestrian bridge in van Dyk Park appears to be in danger of failing.

The Advertiser has requested comment from SANRAL and the metro.
