WATCH: Political parties react to Ekurhuleni metro’s budget

CoE tables R51.2b budget for 2022/2023 financial year

MMC for Finance and Economic Development Fanyana Nkosi presented the City’s 2022 budget speech in the council chambers in Germiston on May 25.

Although the R51.2b budget was eventually passed by the council, it had received a mixed reaction from the political parties concerned, with some political parties describing the back to basics budget as being far from economic realities.

Among the important points, good and bad, highlighted by political party leaders are roads maintenance (potholes in particular), tariff increases, housing and land ownership, debt write-off for those struggling to pay their bills, and the supply of essential utilities, as well as the state of the multi-part coalition government.

Some have in their immediate response congratulated the multi-part coalition government for tabling a budget that they said is focused on all residents of Ekurhuleni and indicates the City’s commitment to delivering quality services for all, instead of mere grandstanding.
Other political parties recounted that the City performed a balancing act when creating the budget, and they have on those grounds decided to support the budget.

The council meeting got off to a good start and was concluded without any forms of disruption as initially speculated by some concerned residents.
