Vaccine rollout: Jabs now available at City’s clinics

Covid-19: There has been a sharp rise in the number of positive cases in the country, with the majority of new cases reported in Gauteng, followed by KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape.

Residents are advised that Covid-19 vaccines are now available at the City of Ekurhuleni’s primary health care centres.

On May 10, the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) recorded 7 523 new cases in the country, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 3 852 148 (a 23% positivity rate).

Previously, state-run vaccination centres and free pop-up clinics were established as part of the City’s push to get more people vaccinated, but according to the metro spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini, due to gradually dwindling numbers of people visiting the facilities, the metro had to look for viable alternatives for the service.

“A decision was taken to incorporate the vaccination project into the City’s primary healthcare services,” explained Dlamini.

He pointed out that the service has been rolled out to strategic centres, and some clinics are not yet equipped with the facilities to offer the service. Centres that are not yet offering a vaccination service refer their clients to the nearest clinics.

Residents are also encouraged to visit participating privately-run healthcare centres, including community pharmacies and pop-up inoculation centres that are offering the doses.
Anyone aged 12 years or older is eligible to receive a Covid-19 vaccine.

As part of the country’s vaccination drive, South Africa has, according to the health department, administered over 35 million doses so far, with over 55 800 doses administered on May 10 alone.
As of May 10, the number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in South Africa was sitting at 3 852 148 with 7 523 new cases reported, and 26 reported deaths; bringing the total to 100 559 deaths.

The number of recoveries was standing at 3 685 196 with a recovery rate of 95, 7%.
