Council reappoints Dr Imogen Mashazi as city manager

The City said through retaining critical talent at senior management level, it has delivered on safeguarding continuity and inspiring a culture of employee excellence.

Dr Imogen Mashazi, who has served as the city manager since 2016, has been through a carefully considered recruitment process and again entrusted with the task of using her skills to steer the City of Ekurhuleni’s administrative structure in the right direction.

The announcement was made on April 28.

The City council also made three other critical appointments, with the incumbents of the posts expected to serve dutifully, lending their expertise in restoring the integrity of the city through impactful service delivery and augmenting the vision of a unified smart developmental City.

Mashazi brings about three decades of local government experience to her role.

She is the first female city manager to be appointed by the Council of Ekurhuleni and is also reportedly the first city manager to be retained to the post of a city manager in Ekurhuleni.

According to the metro, council felt Mashazi had done a sterling job in her previous term, and through the months-long recruitment process, a decision was reached to retain her to the post.

When her previous term expired in November, council extended it for six months to ensure the preparations to pick a new mayor and the process to appoint a new city manager run smoothly. The six-month extension expires at the end of May.

She previously headed up the City’s health and social development department, was acting CEO for Nigel and worked her way up to COO before settling in as city manager. In July 2020, Mashazi scooped the Public Sector Leader Award in the Virtual Top Empowerment Awards.

She has been entrusted with the responsibility to continue leading and managing the realisation of the institution’s vision as the City moves steadily into a new era of governance.

Meanwhile, Caiphus Chauke and Moloko Monyepao have been appointed HoD of Economic Development and HoD Information, Communication and Technology, respectively.

The City is expected to finalise other appointments at senior management level, where the incumbents of those positions are expected to see to it that all hands are on deck to ensure service delivery is not compromised.

The metro said these appointments are in line with its back-to-basics strategy, described as a restorative development plan for the City of Ekurhuleni.
