Drum majorette legend Allan Donaldson retires

Allan served the sport with many titles.

After close to five decades, St Dominic’s Catholic School for Girls drum majorettes trainer Allan Donaldson has retired.

Donaldson, known as the father of majorettes in South Africa, became the trainer of St Dominic’s drum majorettes (The Saints) – the current South African champion drum majorette team – in 1976. In November 2021, he retired and moved to the USA to be with his family, daughter Ashleigh and son Mark-Allan.

Allan devoted his life to this sport and, in so doing, has driven the sport to new heights, time and time again, locally and internationally.

He is the only trainer in South Africa to have attended all the South African National Championship competitions.

Over the 45 years, Allan served the sport with many titles. While passionate about his team, he was equally dedicated to ensuring all athletes are well-served by the sport and its administrators.

The management of the St Dominic’s majorette team will be taken over by Alisha Venter, former Saints leader and head of sport at St Dominic’s. Matthew Higgs will coach the team. Together, Venter and Higgs will strive to maintain the level of excellence and perfection that Donaldson achieved with the Saints.

The top school recently announced the leadership positions for its junior and senior drum majorette teams.

The leaders of the senior school majorettes are Rabi Mobeng (leader), Khutso Mlambo (head sub-leader),
Shaahida Mashaba (head rifle) and Michaela Prokopi (head flag).

The leaders of the primary school majorettes are Leah Matthews and Lizwi Maseko.

The first league competition will be held on April 9 at St Dominic’s. This competition will run from around 08:30 to 16:00.
