St Dominic’s wins GMCA competition

"We are happy that our hardwork finally paid off."

St Dominic’s Catholic School for Girls won the first season’s Gauteng Majorette and Cheerleading Association (GMCA) competition at their premises on April 9.

The competition excluded the cheerleading competition because of the rain; however, that didn’t keep the majorette teams from performing routines that were widely applauded by the spectators. The competition comprised senior and junior teams from all the schools that took part in the competition.

The St Dominic’s primary school team, affectionately known as the Saintees, produced mesmerising routines in all the categories.

They showed a good understanding of their steps and the transition of routines.

In the mace group (small), mace group, flag group and small drill categories they scooped first positions. Only in the flag group (small) they finished second, with the first place going to Curro Thatchfield’s navy team. The senior school team, affectionately known as the Saints, won all the categories.

The co-coaches of the St Dominic’s teams, Alisha Venter and Matthew Higgs, said they are excited and relieved to win the GMCA competition and look forward to the next competition, hosted by them, called the Knight of Champions on May 28 and the South African Majorette and Cheerleading Association National Championships in Polokwane in October.

Venter added she is proud of the Saints family. “We don’t really focus on winning competitions when we are training. We mostly focus on our friendships and traditions as a team. I think today it paid off because we performed very well,” said Venter.
