20 candles for Woodlands

Woodlands International College recently celebrated a milestone anniversary of 20 years.

Multi-talented local personality, community leader and one-time player for Manchester United’s u-21 side Ronnie Matthews and his wife, prominent East Rand businesswoman Janet, fulfilled their vision in 2002 of establishing an exceptional school to nurture emerging talents in the growing youth of Boksburg and its surrounding areas.

Now a flourishing educational institution, the school started with modest beginnings.

According to one of the college’s directors, Audrey Matthews, in January 2002, Woodlands opened its doors to 84 children with an undertaking to raise the bar in private education.

“The college has forged a proud and distinctive legacy, setting the benchmark for excellence in all prescribed academic disciplines through an innovative, challenging and closely considered curriculum.

“Balanced by a comprehensive sports department headed by daughter and fellow director Brenda Sampson, and a forum to express creativity in enriching arts and culture activities, Woodlands has grown to a population of over 1 200, including learners and staff.

“Woodlands is coordinated for its teamwork, highly qualified and carefully chosen teaching staff that helps to unlock and grow the potential of every child.

“The college, comprising pre-primary, primary and senior campuses, are steadfastly committed to maintaining small classes to enhance and expand the learning capabilities of each learner. Woodlands is particularly proud of having achieved a 100% matric pass rate in 2021, with 95% of its Grade 12 learners attaining bachelor’s degree passes.

“Set along the banks of its own magnificent wetland, the school provides a tranquil, natural environment conducive to learning. Woodlands places great emphasis on respect for the environment, sustainability and appreciation of nature,” she said.

The director added Woodlands’ ethos focuses on engendering self-discipline and instilling mutual respect, whilst preparing its learners for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

“Importantly, children genuinely look forward to coming here. Over the past 14 years alone, the college has ushered some 644 alumni into their adult lives and careers.

“It is a place where lifelong friendships are formed and personal, unique value systems encouraged. At Woodlands, our talented young ambassadors stand firmly and confidently poised on the cusp of life, admirably equipped to acquit themselves honourably in whichever field of endeavour they choose to pursue,” said founder and director Ronnie Matthews.
