Members of the Boksburg North SAPS Designated Firearm Office confiscated firearms and apprehended three suspects for possession of unlicensed firearms and live ammunition at Trade Centre on March 4.
According to Boksburg North SAPS spokesperson Const Justice Ramaube, WA Jaco van der Mescht and Sgt Heinrich Bester made the arrests during a routine inspection.
“Two guards were found in possession of a shotgun with no relevant credentials to possess firearms.
“A third security guard was seen throwing his gun into a dustbin. The gun was subsequently recovered, and the guard was also arrested for not having proper papers to possess a firearm.”
Police further confiscated another 9mm pistol, shotgun and 9mm ammunition. All the confiscated items were booked into an evidence register at the station.
Ramaube said it was discovered that two of the firearms were registered in the name of a security company and its serial number cannot be found on the SAPS enhanced firearms system.
“PSiRA was also contacted to verify if the arrested guards were registered with them and will issue the investigating officer a detailed statement during the investigation,” Ramaube added.
Boksburg North SAPS station commander Col Mack Mngomezulu commended the members for their swift response in arresting the suspects.
Police could not confirm when the suspects will appear in court.
