Update: Beaten dog recovering well

The society said the dog has a good nature and gets on well with other dogs.

The husky/chow cross that the Boksburg SPCA confiscated from a home in Impala Park on January 27 after it sustained injuries from being beaten, allegedly by its owner, is well on its way to recovery and up for adoption.

According to Boksburg SPCA manager Vicky Finnemore, the dog is doing well and the society named him Bear.

“Last week, we sent him back to the vet for a check-up. A second x-ray was done and now that some of the swelling is down, the vet could see that the dog’s skull was fractured. It was advised for us to take him for an MRI scan to check for possible brain damage.

“On Monday morning, our vehicle set out for Onderstepoort Veterinary Clinic with a very excited patient in the back. Our boy spent the night in the hospital and was collected yesterday afternoon. The MRI scan revealed that the blows to the dog’s head had fractured his skull but, fortunately, there is no brain damage and the injuries should heal on their own. The vet approved of us placing our sweet boy up for adoption,” said Finnemore.

Finnemore highlighted Bear has the most fantastic nature and gets on well with other dogs.

“His brother (who was confiscated with Bear) has been reserved to a lovely family and we can’t wait for Bear to have a second chance at happiness. Please come and apply to adopt him if you’re interested,” said Finnemore.

Furthermore, she expressed her gratitude to Dr Ross Elliot and Dr Sarah Johnson at Onderstepoort Veterinary Hospital for accommodating the society so quickly and for taking such good care of Bear.

“Boksburg SPCA would also like to thank two amazingly generous donors who were touched by the torment this gentle dog suffered. On hearing that an MRI scan was recommended for Bear, they ensured he was seen by top specialists at Onderstepoort and organised his MRI. They also generously covered Bear’s R4 000 Onderstepoort account for Boksburg SPCA,” she added.
