Fund-raising for sick child’s life-saving operation reaches almost R5-m

The girl’s mother expressed her gratitude to all those who supported the initiative.

The family of the four-year-old girl who needs to undergo open-heart surgery in the USA next month has so far witnessed a miracle when it comes to the community opening their hearts to help.

According to Kyleigh Kista’s mother Serina of Benoni, Kyleigh was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect when she was born.

Kista explained that her daughter has faced many obstacles throughout her life and doctors have tried many surgical procedures on Kyleigh since birth. She has already undergone two heart surgeries.

However, the family recently received the devastating news that their daughter is facing a fresh fight for life.

They were told that the latest heart surgery had failed and a third surgery had to be done to save Kyleigh’s life. They received advice from an expert, who suggested a heart-lung transplant, and advised the family to look for help in the USA.

The family heeded the advice and reached out to the children’s hospital in the USA. And the received quote for open heart surgery is about R5-million.

The family started the crowdfunding campaign and had managed to raise about the amount by January 28.

To help the family raise the outstanding amount for the treatment and associated expenses, Nitro Crew SA organised a car show on January 29 in support of Kyleigh.

Scores of people supported the event.

The event that included a car sound, a show and shine, and DJing competitions, was held at Woodlands College’s sports ground in Boksburg. It managed to raise nearly R300 000.

Dozens of contestants and hundreds of fans came to support the initiative. Among other supporters were local celebrities and radio stations including Mix FM, 94.7’s presenter DJ Chrizz Beatz and DJ Neal Rain.

Other activities included auctioning donated goods, food sales from several stalls, and Chilly Sounds sponsored the sound system.

Speaking to the Advertiser, the girl’s mother expressed her gratitude to all those who supported the initiative, saying more donations were still coming through from generous people and organisations.
