EMS plead with Reiger Park community to report criminals attacking ambulance crews

In all incidents medical personnel were robbed at gunpoint.

Gauteng Emergency Medical Services (EMS) noted an increase of attacks on EMS staff over the past few months in areas such as Reiger Park, Eldorado Park, Alexandra and Eersterust.

In the latest incident, an EMS crew was held at gunpoint in Reiger Park while trying to assist a woman actively in labour.

The armed robbers made off with cellphones and wallets.

This incident sparked EMS workers to march through the streets of Reiger Park on January 21 against the ongoing attacks against paramedics.

“We chose Reiger Park to engage with the community as this is where the latest incident took place. The community knows who the suspects are but doesn’t speak up so arrests could be made,” said Gauteng EMS spokesperson JP von Benecke.

He added EMS personnel are calling on the Reiger Park community to report criminals who attack ambulance crews and work together with authorities to ensure those who work to save lives also feel safe.

“Gauteng doesn’t want to go the RedZone route like the Western Cape,” he added.

The Advertiser is still awaiting comment from Reiger Park SAPS.
