DEMS on high alert for flooding incidents

Members of the public are cautioned to stay indoors and off the roads during heavy rain.

The DEMS highlighted that rain can result in flash floods, negatively affecting low-lying areas and roads, with motorists experiencing difficulty driving.

According to William Ntladi, DEMS spokesperson, the City’s emergency services remains on high alert for any eventualities that might happen within its boundaries and beyond.

“Members of the public are cautioned to stay indoors and off the roads, if possible. Avoid crossing rivers and streams where water is above your ankles. Be extremely cautious when approaching subways, as this is where floods occur easily.

“Already in the past weeks, several motorists found themselves trapped and their vehicles submerged in water. DEMS also responded to several drowning cases.”

“If trapped in a vehicle during a flood, abandon it and climb to higher ground. In buildings, move valuables to a safe place above the expected flood level,” said Ntladi.

Ntladi said flooding hot spots are Railway Street under the subway and Trichardts Road near the Boksburg Customer Care Centre.

In case of an emergency, call the City’s call centre to dispatch the nearest rescue team on 011 458 0911, 10177 or 112.
