Chereez Nel still cancer-free after three years

The littlie fighter will go to Grade One in 2022.

Chereez Nel’s future is looking bright as she celebrates her third year in remission this year.

Chereez, who lives in Boksburg, was diagnosed with undifferentiated aggressive soft sarcoma stage three cancer early in 2018.

The cancer nightmare started with a pain in her right cheek. Her parents’ worst fear became a reality when further tests confirmed that Chereez indeed had cancer.

She received proton treatment from August 2018 to the end of October 2018 at the Maryland Proton Treatment Centre in Baltimore in the USA. In December 2018, the Nel family got the news that Chereez is cancer-free.

The little fighter’s mother, Angelique, said she is delighted to say that Chereez’s health is still in a good condition.

“We recently got Chereez’s scans back from Dr Kate Bennett, and we’re grateful to say she is still in remission. She is still going strong after three years of treatment, injections and radiation. We’re so thankful for God’s grace.

“Furthermore, she recently graduated from pre-school and will go to Grade One next year. Her father (Pieter) and I are so proud of her,” said Angelique.

Her mother said she is still being closely monitored by doctors.

“Chereez will still have to go for monthly blood counts and for MRI scans every three months for the next four years. Moreover, she will need to see a heart specialist once a year for the rest of her life.”

Although Chereez’s story is positive at this point, the Nel family still needs to pay the money back to the donator who made the trip to the USA and treatment possible.

Angelique expressed her gratitude to everybody who supported the family throughout the journey.
